{Sweater: Old Navy, Sequin tank: c/o Windsor Store, Denim: Old Navy
Shoes: Jessica Simpson (similar), Scarves: Gift, Reverie Market, Earrings: c/o Poshlocket

STYLE WORD: Layering up your scarves can be a fun way to change things up. I used two similar tones and weaved together for an ombre look and feel:)
UP FOR DISCUSSION: The “M” Word
Does the word modest leave you with a positive or negative feel?

To be honest, I am always hesitant to use the word modest because it has seemed to be black labeled in today’s society. No one wants to be covered up, right? “If you got it flaunt it” seems to be a more appropriate motto these days. I wish this wasn’t the case. I think modesty is a lost virtue, that should be held up and esteemed alongside with your dignity. It doesn’t have to mean covered up, rather, to me its a reflection of knowing who you are, what you are worth, and dressing with both style and grace to accurately reflect that. This is what prompted me to start this series.  I realize I am one of the few and far between who happens to think the more you reveal, the less likely people can perceive your true beauty. There is something of value when a women carries her confidence and self worth in high esteem, and chooses to wear those as her greatest features, so I hope this series can encourage women to do so!
Would love to hear your perspective on this! If you are linking up feel free to discuss with your readers.

The True Beauty Files:
A lookbook for the modern modeste.
“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”

  • I loooove the outfit!!! I didn’t realize you used two scarves! I like that look. So beautiful Anna… inside and out.

  • Love your sweater, so cute!

  • Love this. I agree with you 100% on the importance of modesty. Modesty and style can definitely go hand-in-hand…and it looks great on you! 🙂 Xo, Katie

  • I agree Anna! I think our true beauty is on the inside so we don’t need to flaunt what we’ve got!

  • Super cute look. And yes, it’s modest, but it’s also fun and flirty.

  • i keep forgetting i want to link up with this! grrrr.
i agree when i was younger i wasn’t such a big fan of the word “modest” but now being a wife and a mom and realizing that showing all of our goodies isn’t God’s best for us i have a totally different outlook on it! i love this series anna!

  • Amen Anna! Thanks for talking about the importance of being modest. They say modest is hottest. 🙂 Very cute outfit.

  • It’s funny you should say the “M” word today! My husband & I were just talking about it last night. How it’s so unfortunate that modesty has gone away! My personal opinion is a classy modesy woman always looks better. Also, you are gorgeous!

  • What a lovely outfit! The scarves add such a nice pop of color. Something I’d never think to do with a black and white outfit. How weird is that?

Regarding the whole modesty thing, I really, truly believe that women that dress more revealing are not confident with themselves internally or externally, and seek attention from others. And I say more revealing in the sense of super short skirts, skimpy tops, etc. I can attest to being very low in the self-esteem department and not very comfortable with who I was as as woman when I was in my late teens/early 20’s. And that is when I tended to dress a little less modest. Or a lot less, sometimes. Now that I have accepted myself for who I am, I totally understand that modesty is THE MOST attractive and alluring way to dress. It also adds a bit of mystery. 😉

  • aw you look so gorgeous! i love this outfit. and i agree, modestly is a lost virtue!

  • Love the mint green scarf! and those square studs look fabulous on you! Knew you’d totally rock them 🙂

  • I love your outfit posts.

  • See, when I hear the word modest, I think frumpy, but then if you’re talking about less is more, than I’m totally with that!! Emma xx

  • I totally agree Anna. I think modest has gotten a bad rap…but there certainly are ways to turn that around. And this series is a great start. Loving your outfit!

  • You are wearing leopard prints and bright colors so clearly you know how to have fun without revealing anything! Kudos to you!

  • this is an absolutely lovely outfit Anna! I love how you combined print with colour and the shoes are beauties!

  • Again, I loove your outfit – how do you always look so dang cute!?

Modesty also stirs up mixed feelings for me. On the one hand I know that I am quite modest and shy when it comes to dressing provocatively , but I’d also be hesitant to use it when referring to myself out loud because it stirs of memories of my mother lecturing me in high school over and over again 😉

I love this series though, and I think that in this day and age modesty is something to be coveted and valued 🙂

  • Marvelously Modest! You look gorgeous because of your style and your smile! What’s beautiful about a more demure way of dressing is that you can focus on an individual’s spark, laughter, sense of style – rather than a lack of clothing. Great fashion look 🙂

  • I linked up Anna! Let me know what you think!

  • I was pleasantly surprised while watching “Project Runway, All Stars” on Hulu. One of the contestants designed a modest (sort of) gown and the judges loved that he brought back the classiness and beauty of a modest gown. I believe many, many people value the integrity of dressing modest. Perhaps society is just misleading us into believing it is deemed as drab. You go!

  • I love the way you twisted up the scarves…clever! I think these posts and your perspective on modesty are VERY important to share. I completely agree and you put it so eloquently 🙂

  • you are sooo stinking cute! i will link up tomorrow!! 🙂 i totally agree with what you are saying about modesty!

  • i have that sweater and i love it!! and i was raised in a very modest and religious household that preached just that..love it!

    xoxo

  • hahaha, it’s nice that your hubby tries to loosen you up for the camera.

great scarf trick. i’ll have to remember that.

I find myself questioning modesty more now that I’m a mother, but even so I’m not sure that I’ve found that line to border on. There’s lots of looks I like and some incorporate short shorts or skirts, but I think of the look as more fashion forward than attempt to be sexy. (Not saying that all short shorts/skirts are high fashion, ’cause I also appreciate looks that are covered up as well.) I don’t know. I do question it though.

  • I love that you are rocking being modest! So needed these days. I am loving where your blog is going hun and miss it so much, need to stop by more often! 🙂

    Looking gorgeous!

  • I love this post! Modesty is a hard topic for some people. Some women aren’t willing to “sacrifice” fashion for modesty. I think that you can do both, you can look great and be modest. Your blog really encourages that! 🙂

  • Loving the layered look. And those shoes…adore. I’ll be linking up on Friday after my fashion post 🙂

  • love that sweater! you look so great!

  • Those shoes! That purse! Love them! The whole outfit looks fabulous and I’m all about the modesty too. xo

  • I love how you mixed the two scarves together, such a great idea!

  • You look incredible, Anna!! And I personally [heart] the “M” word 🙂

  • Love these new mini series you started! Can’t wait to participate in more and thanks again for shedding a deeper light on fashion =) -JB.

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly, Anna, and I’m so thrilled you’re brave enough to voice your opinions 🙂 And also, you’re adorable…!

  • Love the mini series and I also believe modesty is a key. Today is brought to you by the letter M. xo

  • I totally agree and am behind you 100% Anna! I was raised to be a lady, and to me, being a lady is dressing with class and modesty. So many girls are being mislead by mass media and it’s so sad. It is so encouraging that there are women like you who teach their children that by honoring their bodies, they are honoring our Lord. I’m so happy that you’re doing this series! I want to contribute and do a True Beauty Files post! Next week, I promise! 🙂

  • These photos are sweet! You can tell you’re having a good time. 🙂 And LOVE those shoes! xo, Claudia

  • I love these pics of you, Anna! Gorgeous. Love your sweater too! xo

  • I wish clothes were a little more modest – as someone who isn’t completely comfortable with my body (in fact, isn’t comfortable at all), I find going shopping an awful experience – if it’s not too short, it’s too tight, if it’s not too tight, it’s full of cut-outs.
