Building Your Closet From Scratch www.inhonorofdesign.com
Well now that it is on the blog, I am committed! 😉
Taking the leap and putting a conscious effort to build a smart closet and eliminate excess.

I thought it would help to show you items I already have or recently purchased I am putting into this category. This way, you all can join along with the challenge if you choose, but really it’s just to hold me accountable;)

About the pieces: I wanted to choose pieces that are interchangeable, comfortable, high quality, and timeless. Trendy pieces are fun, but I realize it ends up being money down the drain, since the trend leaves as fast as it comes. Granted, I will still report to you on trends for the eHow style blog, but these are the pieces I am focusing on for a long term closet.

I admire minimalism and simplicity and want to be more disciplined about this lifestyle. It can be challenging when you are surrounded by a materialistic culture, but ultimately, I know I feel so much more at peace when there is less, and gratitude for what you have.

Also hoping to support brands who incorporate ethical guidelines in their product creation and distribution. I am learning so much about this topic and hope to learn more!

Ready? Join in the fun on instagram and share your closet building fun!

  • Im doing this as well right now! I’m mostly calling it a spending freeze but it’s been so nice to restrict myself to what I own and not what I could own. 🙂

  • This is so inspiring! I’m really trying to get rid of all the clothes I rarely ever wear before we make this move. I can’t wait to see what all you incorporate in your conscious closet!

Bravo! I am with you. My new rule is that if I wear something in my closet and do not feel like it fits well or I don’t feel confident throughout the day, it goes straight into my “give away pile.” I am a lot more mindful to buy only what I actually need. With that being said, I do love a good sale, so I think this new effort will remain a challenge, but I am up for it!

  • I have been focusing on building a smarter wardrobe. No matter how many items I have in my closet, I tend to wear the same few things over and over again….so there is really no need for a bunch of cheap, impulse purchases.

  • I’ve been working on paring down my closet to essentials as well… a bit easier to do when pregnant, I think! ha! Anyway, I’m definitely interested to follow along as you go and see how you make it work for you.

  • I’m so excited for you, Anna!! It is so awesome seeing bloggers be more conscious of materialism and having a more minimalist approach. I started my conscious consumerism journey in February and absolutely love it 🙂 I only buy clothes that were made in eco-friendly and ethical conditions and if you need some help finding brands, I can definitely help! I often highlight brands I support on my blog, if you want to check it out!

  • I just started doing the same thing today. It feels so good to let go of things that I really don’t ever wear. I want to shop more consciously, not just to be up with the trends, but to follow my own style.

  • I’ve been trying to do this for awhile now. I think I need to sell half of my closet first! Oh, and limit the spontaneous shopping trips!

  • awesome! i love this idea 🙂

  • A great post. This is something I believe in and am continually working towards. I hate to admit how HARD this is for me. Trends and shopping malls are not my problem—thrifting is! It’s all too easy to justify purchasing cheap and secondhand gems—but I know I want to cut back so that I own less. Best of luck to you in your quest for a simpler life! xx

  • Bravo, you are doing what I’ve been trying to do for years. Lately, I have been getting rid of anything that doesn’t fit perfectly or has any little thing wrong with it. I also try to discard something for any new piece I purchase. My closet is less full, but I love your idea about simplicity and I really do try to just stay out of the stores. I am over 60, and space is the problem. I don’t plan to move anytime soon but if I do it will be to a smaller house. And I don ‘t ever plan to convert one of my empty bedrooms into a closet like several of my friends have done. Thank you so much for the inspiration. Here is a blog that I wrote on downsizing, which is similar to the concept.

    • I think that is something so many of us women do. Hang on to ill fitting clothes in hopes they will fit again one day. I am so guilty of that! Time to cut out the maybes and keep what I really love.

  • I’m doing this too, to coincide with my recent move back to Georgia and my new job! As I was packing to move back I couldn’t believe the amount of clothes and SHOES I owned but never wore! They were trendy pieces that I didn’t want anymore. Donated them all and I’m slowly but surely building a “conscious closet” now. For every new piece I buy, I’ll donate another item or two until I feel like my closet is truly efficient and the pieces are timeless and minimal.
    Thanks for sharing these pieces!

  • You kept some great versatile pieces! I agree that it is important to only keep you need or only what you know you will wear.

  • Hi! I just stumbled onto your blog via Pinterest. Just wanted to let you know I think this post is fantastic. I love how you designed the collage of pieces, and I’m curious how you did it. Did you photograph your own pieces or use an online portal? It looks amazing and really caught my eye.
I’m loving your style and wardrobe philosophies and I think I just found myself a new read:)

  • I’d love to see more “coaching” on how to build a conscious closet! So needed!!

  • Loving this, Anna! I am working on the same thing right now. There is one great thing about moving often – the less you own, the less there is to pack. That is some motivation right there 😉

  • Already in Anna, I’ve been doing this for 2 or 3 years now. Still working things out but it makes sorting outfits out much easier.

  • I just started doing this to and I love it! It also makes it so much easier to shop for new things and not feel like I want to get anything I don’t need, since I have a plan in place.

  • Lovely! I am doing the same right now. We recently moved and that’s always when I unload a ton of things. My closet has been a focus. It really takes all the anxiety out of getting ready when there are a few things to choose from…well, as long as I have an outfit that fills every need (a formal dress, a date outfit etc.). I want a felt hat so badly but it’s been 100 degrees here in Orange County! I’ll go buy one anyway…but not sure where to look. Wonderful post!

  • What a great idea! I donated so so so much of my clothes when I made my apartment move recently…and still. STILL. I have so much. And you know what?! I don’t even wear 1/4 of it! I just keep it because “maybe one day!” Also, with the seasons, it’s so easy to pile up on the clothes…But, this makes me want to purge more! I usually stick to the basics anyway, and it looks like you have got a good lot there! Hopefully I can say I’m taking part soon! 😛

  • Hi Anna! I agree with your thoughts and I am totally in for the challenge. I have been trying for a while to have a better, simpler and conscious closet and on my journey I discovered Everlane. A super nice brand, aiming for transparency and creating some very interesting and high quality products. I might be a bit in love with it. Hope you like it!

  • Thanks for sharing. It’s true, we have become so materialistic and the idea of minimalist wardrobe is very appealing. If you’re hoping to support brands who incorporate ethical guidelines in their product creation and distribution I’m sure you’ll love checking out these guys I just discovered. https://threadharvest.com.au/about/

  • I think having a minimal wardrobe is great for so many reasons and would definitely encourage more people to try it out. However, I don’t think you can claim to support brands who incorporate ethical guidelines in their product creation and distribution” when both the shoes are from the GAP brand which mass produce clothing using awful labor conditions and cheap materials.

  • O wow ! Thats a tight closet! I have been doing a all year round minimal wardrobe. I’ve just recently joined your blog so I might of missed a few things. Tee shirts sneakers LBD a blazer or leather jacket or a pair of heels not included in capsule ? Or are they part of a basic wardrobe you pass on from season to season ? Do agree with your principles . Best pay of form me living with a minimal wardrobe is much more practical and mindfull purchases. Its made me look at fashion with different eyes. Now fashion works for me instead of me being a fashion slave at the mercy of a money making racket !
