Kitchen Renovation Phase 1 (+VIDEO)

October 11, 2017

After living with three broken shelves in our fridge for a few months, the level of appreciation for new appliances runs deeeeeep. We got to partner with Frigidaire to try out the new black stainless steel collection, and create this short film sharing one of our favorite family recipes and traditions. I am also sharing our kitchen for the first time, and what are plans are for the full renovation!

If there is a special occasion we are celebrating for someone, we let them pick what to make for dinner. Stromboli is Gabriel’s all time favorite. This is a good recipe to get kids involved in, and it feeds a large crowd! Here is the full recipe. When we filmed this video, we actually finished around dinner time and that stromboli loaf was gone in minutes.

As we start our kitchen renovation, we knew the biggest pieces to figure out first were what appliances to use that fit our family’s needs. This black stainless steel collection was such a good fit for us, and it also set the tone for the color palate we will use for the remodel. I am aiming for a darker hued paint on the bottom cabinets, and white for the upper cabinets!

This image shows all of our plans for the next phase of the renovation. It seems a little daunting to completely remodel a space, so we are sticking to the bones of the cabinetry. The biggest project will be removing the current tiny pantry, but Gabe is confident it can be done! (Ask us in a few months how confident we feel about it.) We are also sanding down and re-staining the floors the same tone as our living room hardwoods. We love these floors, but are due for a re-furbishing.

We are looking forward to sharing the progress as we go, because in some odd way, blogging has a way of holding you accountable for the projects you say you will not keep putting off! 😉

  • Can’t wait to see how the renovation goes – good luck!!

  • So excited to see this room progress! Your plan sounds awesome!

  • I’ve really loved seeing you take this standard build home and make it your own! It’s been such a fun process to watch, and I know your kitchen is going to be beautiful when it’s all done!

  • This is so exciting, I love renovation projects! My husband and I have been renovating our kitchen slowly over the last year and also blogging about it. It definitely keeps us accountable. Can’t wait to see all the progress!

    • Thank you Rachael! It is such an important part of the home for us, so it feels a little nervewrecking making decisions for how we want it to function and flow for the next ten years or more;) Excited to start though!

  • Love the idea of dark cabinets on the bottom and white on top. Can’t wait to see the transformation!

  • I’m excited to see the progress!

I one day want to do my kitchen but just want to restain my cabinets and everyone has said it would be “cheaper” (because it’s not cheap) to buy new ones?!

    • Installing new cabinets is actually one of the most expensive parts of a kitchen renovation! I know IKEA has a more affordable install option, but haven’t heard the best stories for people attempting them themselves so I think we are just going to paint!

  • We have a similar plan for our kitchen and omg if I put it off any longer I might go crazy! I need to set some deadlines up for myself here so I actually start the process. Can’t wait to follow along with yours here!

  • You guys will do great with the renovation! Yes, the pantry will be easy to remove…but do you have a new and fabulous laundry room planned?!? One thing always rolls into another. Good luck!

    • It’s definitely like a long domino effect chain…ha! We are going to create a laundry room in the daylight basement. Considering my boys take up half my laundry loads, hopefully it will be more convenient than anything to have it near their bedroom;)

  • I love how nice and open your kitchen is! It’ll be so much better without that tiny pantry. It’s obviously not structural, so you should have no problems knocking it out! Just make sure you put plastic up first or you will have dust EVERYWHERE! I’ve gone through enough renos to know better now, and with hubby being a contractor, he swears by it, too. 🙂

Can’t wait to see the final product!

  • […] 6. Kitchen remodel – Paint cabinets, replace countertops, extend island, knock out small pantry, etc. You can see our kitchen layout in this post. […]

  • Really nice colors! Beautifully designed kitchen with great design sense. Great work!
