21 Dates of Summer

June 13, 2012

My husband Gabe and I were talking over the weekend about all the things we wanted to do this summer. Little things and big things. Outdoors and indoors. So instead of talking about it and maybe only doing a quarter of it, we decided to make it a challenge. 21 dates of summer. This challenge is going to stretch all the way till Labor Day weekend (I am all for making summer as long as possible). Since he is a teacher, the summer gives us more time to spend together. I can’t tell you enough how valuable it is to even get a few hours alone together now that we have little ones (I am sure you mamas can relate!). We really try to set aside the time each week for just us, since it helps keep our marriage strong, and in turn, helps us to be better spouses and parents. We will share the fun adventures we have here on IHOD, and hope you will follow along! Maybe it can provide some fun ideas to do with your lovah. ;)….
Date 1: Tennis. When we first started dating, Gabe found out that I loved to play tennis, so despite the fact that he had only played a few times in his life (he is more of a rugby guy), he showed lots of interest in learning. He wanted to find out ways to spend time with me that I enjoyed. One of the first signs I knew he was a keeper. Tennis continues to be a fun thing we enjoy and don’t get to do often, so we called our lovely sitter and snuck out for tennis and post-match smoothies:)
Date 2: Farmer’s Markets. (Gabe on the far left getting our brown bag full of peaches that are nothing but a memory now..) There are some pretty amazing farmers markets around Atlanta. We wanted to explore a few new ones. Lucky for us, this spot had the best peaches I had the grace of gobbling tasting.

  • This is such a good idea Anna! I’m excited to see what else you do this summer – it will help me get creative with our dates!

  • This is the cutest idea ever! Can’t wait to follow along and see what the dates are 🙂

  • What a great idea! I’m sure you create some awesome memories with this project 🙂

  • Such a fun idea Anna! I love your little story about tennis because this was like my husband and I. 🙂

  • How fun! Blake and I just played tennis together Monday night and had a ball! Our story is the same…I played tennis growing up and was actually a tennis instructor…Blake, not so much 😉 I remember laughing so hard the first time we played, seeing this football guy try to hit a tennis ball 😉 But he was such a trooper! Playing tennis more often is one of our summer goals! Also working out more together and playing tourists in our new city! Excited for this new series Anna 🙂

  • How cute is this idea! I’m passing this idea along to all of my married friends.

  • Such a great idea!! You guys are the cutest! Where is that farmer’s market?? And I LOVE that bag- and the price!

  • awww what a cute series!! i love this… esp. since with a baby we hardly go on dates anymore. 🙁 we love just going out to eat.. i know that’s soo simple, but it’s so hard to come by these days!

  • This is really cute! Sounds just like a day that my husband and I would love to spend together, too – we love tennis and hitting up farmer’s markets! Since we live in a mountainous area, we love taking a few hours to go for a hike, that’s how we spent Sunday afternoon!

  • This challenge is such a great idea, Anna! I need to get Brandon on board with this challenge this summer. I think it’d be a lot of fun!!

Love that shot of Gabe playing Tennis!
    Happy Wednesday, sweet friend!

  • Totally stealing this idea! We have a six-month old and between both of us working full time and running our house, our marriage is needing some attention!

I think the Fox has a summer movie series that would be fun to check out, or a drive-in movie. I haven’t been to one in ages.

You could also check out the new Food Truck Park. There are tons of new restaurants popping up this summer. Oh, and try to get to a Push Start Kitchen dinner.

  • Oh how cute is this! You gotta squeeze in a beach date somewhere 🙂

  • Great idea!
My husband and I use to have a weekly date night and we took turns planning our dates. The only catch was, we had to plan something the other person would love. When it was my turn to plan we would go to baseball games, the batting cages, we even went to the arcade once.

I can’t wait to see more of your date ideas.

  • Love this idea! What an amazing way to keep a relationship fresh and exciting 🙂

  • LOVE this!!! I adore SNL too 😉 so I love I will be trying this with my lovah…

  • What an awesome and cute idea! We try to do a date night once a week but sometimes run out of original ideas. This summer I want to go to the drive-in movie theater, go berry-picking, go hiking, maybe explore some new parks in the city, and maybe go to one of the free movies they play on the lawn at the local library!

  • What a fun idea! Yes, summer must be strectched as longa as possibe, and so important to plan fun dates with your sweetheart. Have a fun day!

  • Now that is a fun challenge and one that you two will surely enjoy! My husband and I try to have a few dates every month. In the summer we love having picnics in the park and enjoying a game of badminton afterwards.

  • Me and Matt made a tee pee together last weekend which turned into a pole vaulting competition….how our activities escalate so fast I’ll never know.

  • This is such a great idea Anna! It’s starting to turn into winter in South Africa now, but maybe we should implement a 21 dates of winter to get us through all the cold weather 😉 Can’t wait to keep up with your progress!

  • you never cease to be awesome anna!
    this idea is perfect!!!!
totally want to do this (not sure i can get the hubby on board with actually helping me ACCOMPLISH the date goals, but i love the idea of making a list and trying).
    super cute!!

and you two are seriously inspiring. and such a cute couple!
    have fun on your dates!

  • I love this idea! Aaron and I have more time to spend together in the summer too, and I’m always trying to come up with fun, inexpensive dates. These are great ideas!

  • My husband and I always go to the farmer’s market in the summer on Saturday mornings. We love getting to know the merchants there. Great idea – thanks for sharing!

  • I love this idea. Matt and I need to do something like this. We also love to play tennis, but neither of us know how. Haha..we need to take lessons. Lately though we’ve just been going to the gym.

I always want to do a picnic. We even have a cute picnic basket. Guess I need to get on that. 🙂

  • ooo this is fun! looking forward to reading more ideas!

  • I am so loving this idea!! Even the most fun, into-each-couples need to be purposeful about carving about time together to do fun, new, exciting things. Can’t wait to see what else you have planned!

  • those are some great dates and pics! i’ve been wanting to go to the farmer’s market for a while now! love your tote too 🙂

  • Aw! I used to play tennis in high school, and my husband played football. We keep talking about playing tennis on the weekends, but have never gotten around to it. Time to MAKE the time to play! 🙂 Hopefully I can serve. I have a feeling I’ll completely miss it with all the years of non-tennis.

  • I did the same thing on my blog for this summer too. Ours is 50 Days of Summer, though! I can’t wait to see what you guys do.

  • Such a cute idea! Can’t wait to see what else is on your list!

  • I love this idea & think it’s so important to do activities together.
Also can’t help but relate to your tennis story – it’s the same way my husband was welcomed to our family! 🙂

  • This is so inspiring, Anna. Between Tinsel & Twine (peak wedding season!) and our new puppy, my Pumpkin and I haven’t had a lot of time together to just be lovey-dovey. We’re always in “go” mode. We used to make lists of things to do together in a given season or month. We’ll have to make a point to pick that back up.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • We are really going to have to find someone we trust to baby sit for us. We don’t have family help and could really use a date that wasn’t at the dining table. =) Love this and can’t wait to hear how your dates are. =)

  • Awesome challenge! Can’t wait to see the rest! Your first date looks like so much fun!

  • Oh my, I’m going to love this series! I can’t wait to see what yall do! Hopefully Allen and I can copy a few of your dates around the city 🙂

  • i love this idea! my husband & i have recently discovered how much we both love to ride bikes. we’ve been riding a lot & enjoying each other’s company!

  • Ice creams dates are fabulous!!!

  • How cute?
We love doing a picnic at the city island. The island is plain gorgeous, Matthew has lots of fun and we always make sure pack some yummy food. Can’t wait to do it again!

  • Loving this idea Anna – so inspiring! Mr. Smith and I haven’t gotten around to as many alone dates as we’d like, but we do a lot of family dates to compensate. When Nana gets back from Paris, she’ll be sitting and we’ll do something out of the ordinary – like movie in the park, boat tour, drive to the country…that sort of thing! xo

  • so excited for this series!!

  • I love this idea, well done guys for keeping it up and finding time to be together and do fun stuff!

  • such a fun idea! I love it. Going for ice cream is one of our favorite things in the summer and New England has tons of dairy farms. We also like to go to outdoor movies.

  • love this! just started following your blog after someone commented on one of my posts about how it reminded them of this summer date post 🙂 so far summer favorites are rock climbing, picnics, and camping 🙂
