An intro to Brandless.

April 12, 2018

When I heard about Brandless, I was immediately intrigued. How could everything on the site only be $3?! A few friends told me about this company in the same week so I knew I had to check it out.

I was working on getting our guest bathroom ready for guests, so I went ahead and decided to stock it with items I found on the Brandless website, and was really impressed after having a closer look. Everything is the same quality as you at local stores, the items cost less. What Brandless does is remove all of the BrandTax (which is the hidden costs you pay for a national brand). We’ve been trained to believe these costs increase quality, but they rarely do. The average person pays at least 40% more for products of comparable quality. (I love that they put importance into keeping their products non-GMO, fair trade, kosher, gluten free, no added sugar, and even a selection of organic options.)

Psychological effects of room colors.

February 23, 2018

(source)

We have a couple home projects underway, and one of them is a multi-purpose room in our daylight basement.  Since we are going to be using the space for an office area, school desk area, and even a makeshift guest room when we need it, I started thinking about what I want the room to feel like for everyone who will use it. You have probably heard that paint colors can effect our psychology and emotions in different ways! For instance, colors can contribute to lifting our spirits, helping us feel calm, and even lower our blood pressure! My mother in law of Pillar Design works on dental office designs, and has told me how important it is for her to choose colors that can help patients relax. (Because raise your hand if you anxiety levels rise when walking into a dental office.) I find it fascinating, so I thought it would be fun to share a brief run down of the color spectrum and the psychological effects these paint colors can have.

Love in Action Week: Helping new mothers.

November 13, 2017

This was a tough year for so many people around the world. Before all of the noise begins that can come with the holiday season, we wanted to figure out how we could step away from it, and choose a little different route. How can we transmit love and service this year and all year around? I have come up short many years in a row talking about what we want to do a little too late, and allowing every other distraction to rob us of the gift of time. So this year, in lieu of gift guides (maybe I will get to those later, maybe not), I wanted to share with you all some of the things we are doing as a family to put our love in action. I would be honored if you joined us. Also, you won’t want to miss the end of this week! Today I get to share with you a project very near and dear to me.

Winter capsules for kids.

November 3, 2017

After trying my own capsule wardrobe I realized I should be doing this for my kids too.! They don’t need much, and usually want to wear the same favorites over and over again. Sound familiar? I usually get most of my kids’ clothes at consignment shops or old navy, and love supporting small shops when I can. I found some great separates that work well for a kids capsule wardrobe for fall and winter months as thought starters if you need some ideas!

3 quick steps for building a fall capsule wardrobe.

August 28, 2017

It dipped below 90 degrees here which seemed to validate the word Autumn here in GA. It doesn’t get cool enough for jackets here till about November, so I may not be wearing my favorite staples until then, but I have a feeling many of you will be needing warmer pieces in under a month! Below are some quick steps for building a fall capsule wardrobe if you are interested in creating one, as well as some good base staples to get you started.

Bathroom remodel plans!

June 1, 2017

I have been knee deep in bathroom topics lately in order to get everything we need for our basement bathroom remodel. I never understood the amount of detailed decisions that go into finishing a basement. Let me tell you, I was about ready to draw decisions out of a hat by the end because my brain was bananas! However, I am so looking forward to having the extra space soon. We bought the house taking the basement space into consideration (we need the extra bedroom!), so one year later and we are very close to having it finished! I thought it would be helpful to share the process, our bathroom layout, and design board with you and hopefully save you some time if you are in the same boat!

Shared boys room plans.

March 22, 2017

One of our favorite aspects of this home was that there was an unfinished daylight basement. We were hoping to have some large open spaces to work with, so we have plans to finish a shared boys room, laundry room, bathroom, office/playroom, and Gabe’s work space. We are lucky enough to have my mother in law Genevieve of Pillar Design share her architectural design skills with us. We worked with her to establish dimensions and problem solve best layout options for this shared boys room. Here is what we came up with the for the shared boys room so far!

1. Pendant lamps + recessed lighting – Around the edge of the room we are going to use recessed lighting as well as these hanging pendant lamps to create even and warm lighting throughout the room. The boys will have some windows at the front of the room, but a warm even lighting can make such an atmospheric difference in a basement bedroom!
