Money saving tips for every day life.

April 18, 2018

This post is in partnership with American Express, and all opinions are our own.

As you know, I love finding money saving hacks. A few years ago Gabe and I did a good deal of credit card research to see which could help us rack up savings, and American Express is what we landed on. We have used Amex for business and travel purchases, so we were both onboard when we heard about some of the new perks that come with the Amex EveryDay card. We’re excited to partner with them and share with you some of aspects of the Card we are taking advantage of!

Some of our favorite Amex EveryDay Card offers and benefits that are helping us earn rewards:

  • $0 balance transfer fee** on balance transfers made within the first 60 days of account opening. – We had a small balance on another card that had no rewards benefits so we transferred that over and closed the old card.
  • Earn a welcome bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards Points* after making $1,000 in purchases on the Card in the first 3 months. – This is pretty easy for us in a large family to rack up on monthly needs and current home projects, and we will just pay the balance off at the end of each month. Those 10,000 rewards points will hopefully go towards a 10 yr. Anniversary trip we have been saving for!
  • You also get 2x Points on supermarket purchases* (up to $6,000 in a year!) and 1x Points for every eligible dollar you spend*

*Read about the offer and benefit terms.

** Note the rates and fees that apply.

This past week alone we used the card to pick up paint, patio plants, groceries, and even a lunch date. Simple ways to rack up rewards in our every day life, and we pay off the balance at the end of the month. Hope these tips are helpful! Looking forward to sharing more perks about this card this year…we will be updating this post as we go.

On a more serious note, anyone consider a date to the grocery store an exciting Friday night? (Hand raised. We have arrived.)

Another really cool perk: once you make 20 or more purchases on the Amex EveryDay Card in a billing period, you’ll earn 20% extra points on those purchases*. And that helps your points add up even faster. For instance, instead of just 2x points on purchases at US supermarkets, you could be getting 2.4x points (on up to $6,000 in purchases per year)!

We just used the Card to get our car prepped + all our road trip essentials to prepare for our trip across the Midwest.
To name a few:
First aid kits
Emergency road supplies
Activities for the kids (we let them each bring a few activity books)
Snack + diaper bin for behind the driver seat
Back bench net organizer
Mini DVD player (life saving)

We are hoping to redeem the earned points for more family travel this year. Despite the challenges of travel with little ones, we never regret making time for family.

Speaking of travel! We have been needing a new family car for a while since we drove our previous one to its final days when the A/C and audio system went out. We also had maxed out every seat, so we needed a bigger vehicle!

Before embarking on this purchase adventure, we used the new American Express MyCredit Guide for a free TransUnion® credit report. (This is available whether or not you are an American Express Card Member.) This tool offers such helpful financial resources from a credit score simulator to your VantageScore® credit score by TransUnion.

We thankfully had a down payment saved for the car, so we were able to put that on our Amex EveryDay Card since we knew we could pay it off right away and earn rewards points in the process.

The kids start school this month (we are all crying about it…not ready!), and you can imagine what buying books, supplies, and uniforms for three kids looks like! I will take any savings I can get. I am using my Amex EveryDay Card because not only am I earning 1x points for every eligible dollar I spend, I also get the bonus of earning 20% extra points after making 20 or more purchases on the Card in a billing cycle* (terms apply) — pretty easy to do with back to school prep!

We’ve really seen the value of using our Amex EveryDay Card this year – and will continue to do so…especially as we keep finding so many great ways to redeem the points we earn when we use it so frequently!

P.S. Our favorite money saving plugins and apps post.
