Home Update: Lower Patio

July 2, 2018

The weather stays warm through November here in Atlanta, and we use our deck and patio areas more than any other areas of the home during the spring and summer seasons. When we bought this home there was already a large lower cement patio to work with, so we knew we wanted to create a space more conducive to what we use our yard for so we can put it to good use over the years! Always impressed with the quality of Article pieces, so we teamed up again to design an outdoor patio area that would work for our family.

We already broke in the space with the first s’mores of the summer! We have a little fire pit, so we rolled up the rug for a night. The Ora sofa and chairs have water resistant cushions so I have already noticed how it repels the mornings dew and light rain. If we get heavier rain we still bring in the cushions. I haven’t had the best luck maintaining wicker through rainy weather, so the resin wicker option was a great alternative. It offers the look of wicker, but with a much longer life!

I really liked the contrast of shapes between the Daisy lounge chair and the Arca vintage chairs. Both the sofa and chairs are so comfortable, so it has been such a nice change when we are out there with our little ones….especially when family and friends are visiting. Now we also have a prime morning (or afternoon) iced coffee spot too.

I found just the outdoor rug I was looking for, but it is backordered for another few weeks. Target was having an outdoor rug clearance sale, I picked up this one to test out and make sure black worked in the space. Tip: sometimes rugs are labeled as outdoor, but the material isn’t really suited for rain. If it has a flat weave with a more plastic material like polypropylene it will last much longer outdoors.

If you are working on an outdoor space, a good place to start is figuring out what kind of set up would get you to use the space most. Maybe it’s a breakfast table or just a few lounge chairs. Once you determine it’s main purpose, finding seating that is comfortable and easy to maintain outdoors is the best place to start. I love to answer design q’s on instagram, so you are always welcome to shoot me a pic of your space if you need any quick tips!

Cheers to the week ahead:)

    • Thank you Paige! We are so grateful for a space the kids can run free in, and a place we can watch them exert all of their energy;)

  • Hello, I’ve moved from Georgia to Texas. We sold you the piano to your husband. I have a weird space in my home and would like to set up as a bedroom. Do you givevirtual advice with pics of room? Thanks for any help you can give. Peace to you.

  • You sold me when you remodeled your deck and now I’m hooked to your patio design. My mother is currently obsessed with outdoor decor so I can’t wait to show her your post on how to decor the exterior of our backyard (wicker chairs – who would’ve thought!). Blessings to you and your family from Maryland!
