Our birth plan. (Or lack thereof)

June 18, 2015

via In Honor of Design

I usually chuckle when I get an email asking how I manage and balance everything so well. I make sure to assure them, I don’t know what those words mean most of the time.
Now I may have editorial content for the blog lined up a month ahead of time, as well as perfectly prioritized to-do list.  I am an expert at planning a trip itinerary in advance. I can plan a party down to the detail. I can even have all of the families work, school, or just for fun events entered as alarms in my phone two or three times to ensure we don’t forget.
However, unless organization is required, I tend to fly by the seat of my pants.

Most of the time, I couldn’t tell you what we are having for dinner the next day, more or less what we are having that night.
We don’t make weekend plans till Friday at 4pm.
In fact, we have our friends sign a flexibility disclosure that we may not be able to secure hang out plans till the day or hour before. (wink)
And don’t even bother asking me where each child will go to school and when. We don’t know these complex things till forms are due, and decisions MUST be made.

However, there are some things that require advance notice and a little more thought out organization than hour by hour…
For instance, a birth plan. Or lack thereof…

Did you have a birth plan for your first child? What about the second or third?
I realize that you are either a planner or you are…………….not.
Now after reading the before mentioned, can you guess which category I fall under?
If you guessed that I never have a birth plan, you are just about right. He knew!
My theory tends to be that if you make a plan for the birth of a child, that child likes to spite you, and prove you they have more of a personality than predictability. I decided to go into my first two births with an open mind, and let these babies come when they were ready, in the way they wanted to. This was probably a good thing considering the way each birth happened.

Even though all three of mine came on their due dates, they came in very different ways. My labor with Gabriel started off in a crazy way, but ended up in a paced and peaceful delivery post epidural. Veronica came quicker than expected and without the ability to choose medication. If I had any sort of plan in place, it never would have happened because of the nature of both deliveries. However, I decided maybe I would try out some sort of a birth plan for my third pregnancy and hope this would give me a little bit more control over the result this time. Ha! Max the moose surely laughed. My planned water birth never happened.

You can imagine why a making any sort of plan for the birth of my fourth is probably unnecessary. However, I do have a goal. GET TO THE HOSPITAL ON TIME. With how fast Max came, I am afraid I might have to pitch a tent in the hospital parking lot the week before my due date to ensure Gabe isn’t delivering the baby on the side of the road. Which apparantly, Gabe is perfectly fine with (can I have some of that ease of mind please?).

So there you have it my friends. No birth plan, but to call my midwife with the first contraction, and get myself to the hospital in a timely manner. I may just opt for that epidural too if I was so lucky as to have the option this time;)

Speaking of birth stories, I LOVE to read them. Especially right before giving birth myself which makes no sense whatsoever. I am a glutton for self – antagonization I guess, as I am also busting through seasons of Call the Midwife.Leave me some links if you have some good ones!

Lemon Basil White Bean Hummus Recipe via IHODHummus and Pita

Let me introduce you to my friends from Homespun ATL today. They are the talented husband and wife duo who focus on the art of bringing people together over wholesome food. We teamed up for the Search for Your awesome party last year, and I am looking forward to teaming up again for our upcoming West Elm event. They are so kindly sharing a summer fresh Lemon Basil White Bean hummus recipe for you today:

Ingredients
Lemon Basil Hummus
1 Cup Dried White Beans (Navy Beans, Cannellini, or Great Northern)
4 ea Garlic cloves
1 T Tahini
2 T Honey
½ C Oil (Grape Seed or oil blend)
1 ea Lemon Zested, Juiced
Salt & Pepper to Season

Basil Lemon Gremolata
¼  cup Basil, chopped
¼ cup Parsley, chopped
1 ea Lemon, zested
2 ea Garlic cloves, grated
½ C EVOO
1 tsp Chili flake
Salt & Pepper to season

Procedure

  • Soak beans overnight in water.
  • Strain beans and rinse well.  Place in pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil then lower to medium heat. Add the garlic cloves. Cook beans until very tender. May take up to an hour.
  • Once the white bean are tender, strain and reserve the liquid for pureeing.
  • While the ingredients are still hot place, in a mixer/ food processor with a little liquid (¼ cup to ½ cup) to help puree. Add evoo, tahini, honey, lemon zest and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper. Begin pureeing until the hummus is smooth. Blending while beans are hot will create a very smooth hummus but be very careful during this process.
  • For gremolata, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix together. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Refrigerate up to one week.

Serving

  • Garnish with olive oil and lemon-basil gremolata. Pair with crostini, cut veggies, or crackers.

Father’s Day Gifts Under $15

Fathers Day Finds under $15
Father’s Day, birthdays, and anniversaries all fall in June for us. Since each of my little ones would love to gift their pop with a special something for Father’s Day, I looked around to find ways each of us can gift him with his favorite things all within budget.

Here are 10 Father’s Day Gifts for under $15:
(Top to bottom)
1. Dollar Shave Club – Monthly razors sent straight to your door + if  you can get The Shave Butter and Post Shave  for $15 total. Quite a steal. Gabe loves this stuff.

2. Fishing Vest Pack – Retractor, nipper, forceps, and Leader straightener. Necessities for the guy who likes to rise early with the trout.

3. Looking Sharp soap bar – Punny soap for your hard-working, sharp as a tac fella.

4. Pledge matches – Giant size matches for the camper, cigar smoker, or maybe even candle lighter….with an honest pledge to be true and brave if used;)

5. Knife Sharpener – Portable sharpener for all pocket knives, cooking knives, etc.

6. Camp mugs – We are heading camping in a few weeks, but coffee and other brews won’t be left out. These cool mugs are only $10 each at Huckberry

7. Do what you can with what you have, where you are.

8. Zippo lighters – Pocket sized flip lighter that is WIND PROOF! These save the day when it comes to outdoor use.

9. Cord Tacos – A clever  variety of Father’s Day themed cord tacos to keep phone plugs and USB cords organized.

10. Head lamp – Also an essential for the outdoorsmen. Whether they are getting under the hood of the car, hiking at dusk, or starting a bonfire at dawn, these allow both hands to be used while this provides the light straight from the line of vision.

Hope this is a helpful guide for those of you who saved the gift hunting for this week ….(raising hand).
P.S. Amazon Prime has free two-day shipping (I use this option a little more than I’d like to admit.). Cheers!

As promised, here is the easy tutorial for this boho inspired fringe trim chandelier. I couldn’t quite find the finishing touch to the bedding area of the guest room refresh I was looking for. I wanted a decorative chandelier, but couldn’t quite find what I was looking for at the right price. I headed to my local craft store and browsed the trim aisle, and couldn’t believe I found every single detail needed to make this right in a row. The crochet effect trim, the tassels, the beading, etc. Read on for the DIY to make your own! Cross my heart it’s easy:) VIEW FULL POST

Guest Room Refresh Reveal.

Guest room by In Honor of Design

As you all know, we have been renting this little home for the past few years now while we figure out where to settle. I decided not to put making a home on hold, and make the most out of the home we had. I have been taking it room by room and refreshing the spaces from scratch!

Before

Our guest room had many holes in the wall from re-arranged and half hearted attempts at artwork and decor which I started, but never finished. So when you see this before pic, it is probably more accurate to call it a guest room overhaul! I knew I wanted our guest room to feel comfortable, inviting, and on the bohemian side. Thankfully, Anthropologie has that edge to it, and it seemed like a pretty good idea to me to team up again for a room refresh;)

Cozy corner | In Honor of Design

Wall color
The wall color was the first thing I chose for the room. The previous paint color was a pretty dull brown, and I was hoping for a fresher neutral with a subtle hue. We went with a light grey (Valspar’s White Pepper in eggshell finish), and it had the slight blue undertone I was looking for. When the room is small with one main window, it is tough to pull off a dark wall color. I would have loved to try a dark charcoal, but decided I’d keep it light on the walls and go for the dark color in the rug. I really like the result of the grey since it provided a good base to work with varying colors.

The Rug + Quilt
I chose the rug and the quilted coverlet simultaneously to compliment each other. I was smitten for Loloi Rugs, and found exactly the bold pattern I was searching for, but in a more unique design than I had anticipated to find. (I wrote more on  choosing the right rug for a room here.) Since there was some pattern in this design I kept the quilt simple. It is a reversible coverlet, and had the tones I was looking for. Not to mention it is incredibly silky soft.

Live cut headboard | In Honor of Design

The Headboard
Gabe has been stalking lumber yards in the area for a good live cut piece for a headboard for months, but it seems they are extremely hard to find in the size we were hoping for. They are also extremely HEAVY, which created a hanging problem. I remembered my friend Kristin of The Hunted Interior created a genius live cut headboard tutorial made out of plywood so we based this design using her suggestions. I drew the edge on the plywood and we used a jigsaw to cut it out. We designed the headboard so one side could hold a sconce light as well as a shelf underneath it in place of a bedside table. Gabe used a biscuit jointer to attach the shelf, and drilled out a 2 inch hole underneath the sconce base to string the cord through. We used a light oak stain and semi-gloss varnish to finish it. Tip: put a minimum of two coats of the varnish on, and use tack paper to get all the dust off. We both had fun with this project, and hopefully will get to work on another together soon.

Boho textiles | In Honor of Design

The textiles
Choosing pillows and curtains are next to impossible before you have your main pieces figured out. I have made so many pillow purchases and returns before realizing it is just better to wait till everything else is in place first! Since I wanted to keep most of the textiles in a neutral base, I went with the ivory cut out curtains and pushkar pillows that had some interesting texture and tones in them that worked together well. I am not into being too matchy-matchy, and love a looser organic vibe, so these are probably my favorite pieces in the room! I can’t wait to try the linen sheets, since those have such a soft and comfortable material. A blanket or throw is also a great way to pull colors together and add texture to a space. I used this through to pull out more of the charcoal and ivories in the room.

The Bohemian Chandelier
I couldn’t find a bohemian chandelier/hanging piece online or at any markets in my price range, so I got fed up and made one! I will share the EASY tutorial tomorrow! *UPDATE: Tutorial here!

Dresser upgrade | In Honor of Design

The details
The fun part is finding the quirky details that really bring a room together. I bought a bunch of different solid and patterned knobs and pulls to re-vamp a simple white dresser. For the shelf, I found the animal face vase here, and the bottle neck vase here. It’s nice to have some magazine options for guests so these two vases were good bookends for keeping them in place.

The giant plant and planter I picked up at Lowes. I realize it is a risk for me to keep anything green alive in my home, but I find it so much more energizing to have real plants if possible. I mixed faux and real for the dresser top though. No one needs to know;) The admiral hanging mirrors I found at Anthro and the larger wooden one I found at HomeGoods. Mirrors can be a nice alternative to artwork to play around with!

Whew! Did I miss anything? I told Gabe I might leave our master bedroom and move in here…almost serious. We use this room as a guest room when family or friends come to visit, We are still figuring out room situations for when the new baby comes.

Happy almost weekend!

*Anthropologie so kindly sent the bedding, pillows, and curtains for this post. The rest is purchased and created by IHOD. So happy to have been able to work with one of my very favorite companies for this project. You can see the last bedroom we teamed up on here!

Be Kind Work Hard Give Thanks

” Success is not the key to happiness, Happiness is the key to success.”
– Albert Schweitzer

In November, I finished up a whirlwind year of hosting workshops across the country for creative entrepreneurs. The Brand Market was exhilarating to help so many people with their businesses, and I felt very thankful to see a small vision I had come to life. I didn’t take for granted that I was able to teach, create, encourage, and travel as my line of work. I couldn’t have felt more grateful.

But as I sprinted through 2014 with a torch in hand I arrived to the end panting, out of breath, and my head spinning. How did the year fly by? I couldn’t seem to find my motivation anywhere, and I took it as a cue to REST.  A  few weeks later I found out I was expecting. It confirmed to me that God knew I needed that rest, and it was time to take a good look at the next few years. VIEW FULL POST

Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet

June 9, 2015

Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet | In Honor of Design

We just got back from a jam packed travel weekend, and everyone is currently passed out in their beds, and I am nodding my head at the computer. I could wait to share this later this week, but I was just to jazzed about this incredible SUGAR FREE, CLEAN EATING, WHOLE 30, whatever-you-want-to-call-it Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet to wait to tell you!

If you have a ninja blender, food processor, yonana machine, or vitamix you should be able to make this with ease and agility my friends.

Ingredients:

2 c. Frozen Mango Berry Medley (Strawberries, Mangos, and blueberries are a great combo!)
1 c. Frozen Cherries
2 Tbls. Chia Seeds
1 c. Fresh Cherries
Optional: Greek yogurt & honey (if you want a creamier breakfast sorbet)

Directions:
Blend your frozen fruits and chia seeds until a sorbet consistency starts to form (there can be small chunks depending on your blender or processer).
Slice your cherries in fourths and hand stir in with a spatula.
*Pre soak your chia seeds in water for 10 minutes for best energizing effectiveness.

This is helping me curb my addiction to ice cream AND coffee believe it or not. It’s a good sugar free kick start to the morning, with the equivilant amount of energy boost a cup of coffee gives me (without the crash afterwards!). My little ones request it frequently and since it pairs well with almonds or granola.

Have any must make frozen breakfast smoothie recipes to share? I am always up for a new one!
TTFN. (Only the cool people know what that stands for;))
