The Brand Market L.A.

August 1, 2014

I totally get it. There are reasons no one leaves the California coast, and that became very clear while I was visiting. The weather is too perfect to be true which is obviously why most people are pretty friendly. I called Gabe and asked him why we didn’t live there already…;) I will have to share some of the local areas I explored, #butfirst…..

The Brand Market L.A.

Each and every Brand Market workshop so far has had its on vibe to it. This workshop by far was the most color and light filled thanks to Studio DIY HQ! It felt like stepping into the world of Rainbow Brite (which of course I am more than okay with;))…

Verve Coffee

We had fresh coffee and mugs to start the day provided by Verve Coffee Roasters, which you can order straight from L.A. to your kitchen FYI! Such a good crew.

Brand Market L.A. recap
We had some sweet and savory pastries made from scratch by Katie the Baker (she even made gluten free options!) They were divine. She made The Brand Market cookies too! I died. Lunch was catered by Lemonade L.A. (Which was so good I had to hit it up again before I left CA.)

La Fleur Kitchen - Brand Market Workshops

If it were up to me, I would have tried to smuggle the floral arrangements back to Atlanta…can you believe how fresh and fun they are? All created by La Fleur Kitchen.

The Giving Keys - Studio DIY HQ

Caitlin Crosby and Brit Moore of The Giving Keys started the day with how they got started (pretty unreal!), and how they grew their business. Social media focus, hiring a team, systems they use, etc. I was fascinated by it all. These gals are such a blast. Was so happy I got to know them.

Kelly Lanza // Brand Market WorkshopStudio DIY + IHOD
Kelly Lanza and I tag teamed sessions as well. If you don’t know Kelly, you need to know that she is a creative DIY genius who has built a successful business out of her blog in a short amount of time. So happy we got to hang out and talk about entrepreneurship together.

Seriously, my co-hosts were incredible, but so was the class of women. I was completely in awe of ladies that came through that door. I am already looking forward to the next one.

All photos were taken by Esther Lee (her work is remarkable!)

Washington D.C. and Chicago are next! We finalized dates and locations so tickets are now avialable!

Creative Profile: Justina Blakeney

July 29, 2014

One of the things that always keeps me going in my creative jobs is my peers. I think it can do a world of good to take the time to connect through the great world wide web, but even better if you get to connect in person. When I headed out to L.A. for The Brand Market workshop, I was able to spend the afternoon with Justina Blakeney. After hanging with her, I was wishing she lived closer. What I love about Justina is that she is fierce at whatever she does. She goes the extra mile, takes the risk, and hence brings life to genius creativity. I would say she is a strong voice in the industry, and I so appreciated being able to chat with someone on everything from motherhood, the funny business of social media, blogging as we know it, and the crazy life of an entrepreneur…

Justina Blakeney

Here’s just a few things you should know about Justina: She makes these insanely cool portraits just from foliage. (Check the series on instagram: #facethefoliage) They each have a story and you get sucked in to the mystery every time.

Face the foliage - Justina Blakeney

Pretty fascinating, huh? I hope she compiles these for a coffee table book someday. Can you guess which one is me? Was honored to get my portrait done:)

the creative residency

She also recently founded The Creative Residency which is a program of intense, fast paced, keep it real seminars on specified topics such as Social Media, Landing a Book Deal, and Bio Bootcamp. They are currently run in L.A. but hoping they make their way across the country!

And if you aren’t already convinced this gal is a mover and a shaker, you should know about her book coming out called The New Bohemians: Cool and Collected Homes (coming soon!). Considering my interior design preferences leans towards Bohemian, I can hardly wait!

Justina and Ida

Last but not least, she is a mother to a beautiful little curly haired Ida. Justina does an incredibly job encouraging women of all races to embrace their image and celebrate their post partum bods. I applaud that whole heartedly! She is a rockstar, no?

Head over to her blog and have a look. You can keep up with her here:

4 Instagram Accounts to Sweeten your Monday

July 28, 2014

White and Blue | IHOD

Wait, what? It’s Monday??
Whirlwind weekend has my head spinning! How was yours?

I thought it would be fun to share with you some recent instagram accounts I really love. This is the one form of social media I really enjoy and don’t get overwhelmed by. I try to go one day each week when I cut off from the internet (oh do I love that freedom!), and on the days I do tune in, I am attempting oh so hard to keep to designated times. My goal is to get rid of mental clutter. I realize that even scrolling through feeds can eat up our mental and emotional energy, and many times it is on people who aren’t even huge parts of your life! Also, read the article “I’m Not Here, I’m Not There” in the current issue of Darling Magazine, and this study that proves constant multi-tasking/social media checking can dumb you down faster than marijuana. Yep. Nothing more motivating to be more disciplined with my phone than that little tidbit of gold.

That being said, when I do tune in, I really appreciate people who have a good perspective on life and share honest content. People who I respect and admire. Here’s a few to take note of:

@latonyayvette // @sarahjlarsen

Salt of the earth good people who I wouldn’t mind being neighbors with and sharing some conversation over coffee:) Who are some of your instagram favorites? I am all ears!

P.S. Shared three ways to wear this white dress on eHow as well as three sunglasses trends I am digging.

Rosemary Beach Tour

July 23, 2014

Gabe planned this trip months ago and we only talked about it every day since. Something we had been dreaming and scheming about since our honeymoon. A 5 year anniversary trip, except it was now 6 years since Maximilian crashed that party. (He was kind of better than any trip.) Gabe decided we would leave at 5am to ensure an afternoon at the beach, so we got up like teens on spring break ready to conquer the wide open road.

What’s that? A noiseless car? No sound of veggie tales in the cd player? The vacation started right in the car with the beautiful sound of silence. The only other thing I valued as much was uninterrupted meals. (I know you mothers hear me on this.) We were ready for this trip. And I mean…we hit it hard and seized the days.

Here’s a tour and a highlight of our favorite spots…..

Also, we thought it would be fun to share our iphone reel with you on the new Steller app. (I am hooked! More on that soon!)

Rosemary Beach, Seaside, and Alys Beach are all on the 30A strip within a mile of eachother so we biked and walked back and forth between them all week. There is everything you need right there and everyone is very friendly. The towns were built in 1995 and modeled after European cities so the look and feel is modern and quaint. Gabe and I wanted to share a few of our favorite spots in case you visit:

Anna:
Bar and Bikes: You can lose with this killer combination;) Gabe ordered a brew and I ordered the yellow bike;) We spent the day exploring Alys and Rosemary Beach towns and found some hidden gems like the white and mint house above (Someone great has to live there…)
La Crema – We ate here twice because the food was phenomenal and not as pricey as some of the other spots. It is a Tapas and Chocolate spot with all white modern seating so you know…heartthrob. Some favorite dishes included the Seafood Paella, Patatas Bravas, Steak Empanadas, and the Nutella Molten Lava Cake…I can’t even.Rosemary Beach Entrance to the Ocean – That first photo above…the bikes right of the beach and a slew of black and white umbrellas made my heart sing. I knew it meant hours of wave riding and suntan lotion squirting. I could prop a hammock there for life.
The Hidden Lantern – We had a rainy day so this cute bookstore was a great place to curl up for an hour and read. We stopped in a few times.

Gabe:
Charlie’s Doughnut Truck – Some of you already heard about Ron who we met one morning while trying to catch the donut truck. He helps run it with his military buddy Charlie. You can read a little about our chat with him here. Doughnuts in the morning and frozen yogurt in the afternoon for half the price as the other stops. Winning all around. Quality people, quality sweet tooth material.
Aly’s Beach ocean side – quieter and less crowded so you have plenty of space to wave ride with no precautions;)
Rosemary Beach downtown square – with coffee in hand and a good bench for people watching.

It took a few days for me to fully relax. It really proved how worthwhile it is to plan for vacations with your husband…even if just for a night. These are the days we will pull strength from when there are the rough ones. I was so peace filled and happy just to be with Gabe and proudly own that left hand he kept offering me to hold. A chance to be with each other with full focused attention is invaluable. Hope we can take our little ones here someday. There were so many young families there, and it was hard not to think of them the whole time.

Hope you all get the chance to see this place. It is a surreal little spot on the globe.
Cheers!
Gabe and Anna

P.S. My suit is from Albion Fit (awesome selection of suits!) and you can get the rest of the details about what I packed here!

Suitcase Spill: Packing Light

July 22, 2014

I have been focusing a good deal on simplicity this year and so my packing habits have lightened up as well:) I thought it might be helpful to share how I packed for a 5 day trip. I knew we would be pretty active with varying activities so I used items I knew I could wear more than once. This list doesn’t include my workout wear, toiletries, or bathing suits so give or take….

^And a few ways I wore them^^

In my Bag (From Nena and Co.):
2 pairs of Denim shorts (for biking and exploring)
1 Tank
1 Tee
3 Dresses for dinner in the evenings (Dress One, Two, and Three)
2 Linen Shirts (Shirt one c/o and two)
2 Beach Coverups (One and Two)

Shoes:
2 pairs of comfortable sandals (Pair One and Two)
1 Pair of Flip Flops
1 Pair of Booties (probably could have done without)

Accessories:
5 Hats (excessive, but you know me – an accessories girl)
Sunglasses
2 Necklaces (Necklace One and Two c/o)
1 Bracelet Stack (Bracelet One and Two)
1 Tote c/o
I basically rotated these all 5 days and it worked out really well with no shortage on clothes by the end of the week. I have started to clean out my closet little by little on instagram and by donating to Whispering Hope. It feels freeing. Material goods can weigh you down (literally) and metaphorically. I hope to continue to move in the direction of living with less. Now granted, packing for my little ones is a whole different feat (tips for packing with kids here).

Will give you a tour around the city of Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach tomorrow!

3 Headband Trends to Try

3 Headband Trends to Try | IHODHeadband Twist via IHOD

I gave headbands the shaft months ago (which is ironic considering that used to be my etsy business!), but I was playing around in Anthropologie in the accessory section, fell in love with a few that I have been wearing throughout the summer. Sharing three headband trends to try over on the eHow style blog:)

One more post coming your way this weekend!
