I’ve been in spring cleaning mode for what feels like a year now. ha! I think I really just want to get rid of excess, and also be more purposeful about what I am purchasing. It’s not an instant thing though. Reading recommendations or asking around has honestly been the best way for me to figure out options that work. I want to continue to share more about some of the products I am swapping for cleaner alternatives in case it can benefit some of you as well. Today let’s cover 5 personal care items I’ve swapped for safer alternatives.
(Her expression when she runs is the best.)
Deodorant – I don’t think there are enough conclusive studies about deodorants and anti-perspirants yet, but if I can find a cleaner option that does the job I say why not?! This article had some really good points to consider. I asked many of you what were the best clean ingredient deodorant options, and here were the highest votes: Native, Primal Pit Paste, and Lavanila. I ordered Native and really love the scent. I don’t think sweat in itself is a bad thing, but odor control is a grand thing! I’ve also tried Schmidt’s which was pretty good.
Sunscreen – This is what initially got me to start my switch to a cleaner lifestyle. I couldn’t believe the ingredients that were allowed to be mass produced and distributed in common sunscreens. I have tested so many on my little ones, and there are some great ones out there like Babyganics and Badger, although I was completely won over with how well Beautycounter’s sunscreen rubbed in without leaving a white film or sticky residue. I use the body and face stick the most for both myself and my kids since it goes a long way.
Lipstick – I don’t wear lipstick often, but I love a good bold coral or shimmery nude for the warmer months. My favorites are the Beautycounter Lip Sheers in Terra and Coral + these new Color Intense Lipsticks (They last for hours.) in Brunch and Garden Party. I love not having to re-apply!
Shampoo + Conditioner – To be honest I wasn’t too impressed with clean ingredient shampoos I have tried. They left me with flat lifeless hair. Anyone else have that experience? I also like when shampoos actually lather and rinse well. I have been using the Volumizing Shampoo + Conditioner for a few months now, and have been really happy with it. Smells so good, and it actually lathers well! It adds more volume to my hair, which is much appreciated after having 5 little ones. I will blow dry it with a round brush and that will last me for a few days without having to re-wash.
I would also love any recommendations for a clean dry shampoo and hairspray! This one looks promising. Also, anyone else get headaches from perfumes? So far essential oils have been nice, but I would also be curious if there are any other options out there!
Happy weekend:)
The best resource for product ratings is the skin deep database. You can enter any product to see what they rate on a scale of 1 to 10 for how clean the product is. It’s been really helpful when looking for the options mentioned above!
