Love in Action Week: Day 5 – One warm coat.

November 30, 2017

This is something that we may often think about, but don’t know where to turn to help the homeless in our cities. In Atlanta alone there are 7,000 homeless men, women, and children. That is a heartbreaking number! In the U.S. (which is considered a wealthy country) over a half a million people were reported homeless.

Children have such big hearts, and are always so eager to serve. When I mentioned I was trying to find coats to bring to people who don’t have a home to keep warm in, my kids started offering their currant coats to give. So of course it made me think I should probably go through my own stack. I love a good coat, and have collected a stash that I don’t actually NEED. I went through all of our coats and realized we had two bags worth of children’s and adult coats. I admit it was a little hard to part with some of my favorites, but I would rather them be put to use to keep someone warm this season.

If you are not sure where to start, organizations like One Warm Coat help you find local places to donate gently used or new coats to distribute to the local shelters. Some places offer ways to even schedule a pick up of items like Salvation Army. J.Crew and Madewell were offering discounts if you brought in a coat to donate. Any other ideas? Leave them below!

I hope these posts have been helpful for you as you figure out ways to give back this year!

Love in Action Day 2: Feed the Hungry

November 14, 2017

Today’s Love in Action post was our kids’ idea. They really wanted to help “bring food to people who don’t have any dinner.” Local food banks across the country have a shortage this year due to so many natural disasters. As they are preparing to provide Thanksgiving Dinner for as many people as possible, we knew this would be something we could get our whole gang involved with. Food can be a language of love when someone is experiencing difficulty in one form or another. A warm meal and shelter during a holiday can provide a sense of community and support during an otherwise difficult time. It doesn’t have to be difficult to help feed the hungry! Here are a few ideas we came across after calling around to local places in our city: VIEW FULL POST

Summer Capsule Wardrobe: Looks 1-7

June 26, 2017

Look 1: Striped muslin dress (similar for less), straw bag, soludos
Side notes: Soludos run a tad small, so go up a half size. Super comfortable!

What happened to June?! It is supposed to be good and long, and it disintegrated into thin air it seems! I owe you all an update on the Summer Capsule Wardrobe. Here are what I have found to be the pros and cons of the capsule, and the first 7 looks!

Motherhood Hack: Activities for encouraging independence

May 4, 2017

I definitely leaned towards the side of being a helicopter parent when Gabriel was little. It was mainly out of fear. Fear of messes, fear of catastrophe, fear of  any harm coming his way. Since my hands are no longer as free as when I had one, I have slowly learned how to accept these little independent initiatives as opportunities for them to come into their own. It’s also been a good exercise for me to understand I am not in control of every situation. I have noticed that when given the chance to try something new, they start to make choices on their own and become more confident about trying new things.

When they grow up, and are on their own I hope they are confident in who they are and the decisions they make as well as being able to bravely determine right over wrong. Since I now have children in all different stages, and 4 out of 5 are experimenting with new ways to be independent, this topic is on my mind quite often. I thought I would share some ways I am encouraging independence in our home, but I would love to hear your ideas as well! Let me know your favorite books, blogs, or resources on this topic!

Behind the scenes of a blog update.

April 18, 2017

I recently was asked to share “more transparency as to how we actually run the blog,” since it was hard to imagine how I could do so with little ones. So how about an update on how we are keeping things running here? The short answer I give to these kinds of questions is usually “well I don’t sleep a whole ton.” But as you can guess there is much more to it than that, so I will go a little deeper today. I know time management and balance are things I am always learning, so this topic can hopefully help some of you also trying to juggle multiple jobs or situations in your life.

Him + Her Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

January 30, 2017

We aren’t big on gifts for valentine’s day, but these are ideas that Gabe and I are on board with should we so choose to go that route. (wink wink)

Him + Her Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

  1. I’ve raved about Sarah Happ products before, so the Lip Slip  and One Luxe gloss are a simple and sweet duo for perfecting the pucker.
  2. . Up for the splurge? This combo includes barrel aged maple syrup, a bourbon brown sugar candle, and a big joe coffee mug. A handsome set for the handsome gent.
  3. To wash, To wear laundry travel bags for the gal who loves practical and needs a little organization motivation. (Hand raised.)
  4. Handcrafted leather wallet with red stitching that fits perfectly in your guy’s back pocket.
  5. Just add coffee. Something I never tire of. The Hot Stuff mug that adds a little nudge and nod to let your lady know how you really feel;)
  6. Had to include this Olivia Burton watch for a good blush pink splurge. Maybe add a handwritten note with: “You are my favorite person to spend TIME with.”
  7. For the outdoorsman, frequent traveler, or business man on the go, these Just Porter backpacks are spacious and waterproof! They also donate a backpack full of school supplies with every backpack purchased.
  8. This pair of bluetooth headphones can be a clever and thoughtful option to be used for travel, work, or at home. Note to add: “Along with these headphones, here’s a playlist to tune out the busy world around you, and enjoy some time to yourself.”
  9. Both the Well Known book and the makers behind it are fantastic. It’s easy to stick in your bag to bring on a date or group gatherings and is loaded with questions for meaningful and thought provoking conversations based on the five levels of knowing someone.
  10. I don’t think any girl could refuse an excuse to take some time to unwind and relax with these DetoxCalm Bath salts. Just add a few sweets and you have yourself a winning combination.

Happy Monday and hooray for just about making it through January!

Master Bedroom Makeover

January 18, 2017

The master bedroom…..a place we spend little time, but the time we do spend there is valued. It is the place we unwind from the day, and  re-charge for the next. In recent months it has been filled with boxes from our move back in May due to our downsize in closet space. It was actually a welcome change considering it forced us to get rid of anything we didn’t use or need. Our bedroom wasn’t a priority when we first moved in, but we soon realized the disheveled clutter that was consuming it was not contributing to a peaceful day’s end. It was doing quite the opposite. Every time we walked into our room our anxiety levels rose from the clutter. So we decided to bite the bullet and make it a focus.
