girls bedroom makeover - scalloped bunk beds

We started working on the girls’ bedroom as one of our first home projects in this old home! With many big life events happening in between it took much longer to wrap up than we anticipated, but I really loved the process so much. Kids’ bedrooms are my favorite to work on because you can step into their imaginative and whimsical worlds and try to reflect that into their surroundings. The girls were missing their old room so I took many of the same elements and re-worked the plan to make a little magic in their new space.

olaf wallpaper by sandberg

I chose this Olof pattern wallpaper by Sandberg since it is one they can grow with over time. It works for a little girls’ room as much as it would an adult bedroom (I would put this on my own walls!). This particular design came as a double roll, and the pattern was easy to align. (All of the supplies we use to install.) Wallpaper is always an investment of time and funds, but I think it can make such a big impact on the outcome and feel of a room. (I shared where to find more patterned wallpaper options in this post.)

The bookcases and closets had a very cheap trim around them that was basically thin foam. Since it was cracked and already falling off we went ahead and replaced it with a wooden fluted trim and rosettes, and pinths we found at our local supply store. You can find this at most hardware stores! Gabe always prefers to prime and paint them first before installing using a spray gun. He then installs using a nail gun, caulk, and nail filler followed by any paint touch ups needed. We used the color Cloud White by Benjamin Moore on all trimwork!

Supplies used:
Wood fluted trim
Wood rosettes
Wood plinths

installing crown molding - In Honor of Design

For crown molding, we wanted to use a historic inspired style. You can now find so many fantastic options that are a flexible pvc material on More Than Moldings. The flexible material allows you to work with uneven walls (a classic old home feature), and gives you more flexibility to install evenly.

DIY scalloped bunk beds girls room design

The first project we did before we even started wallpapering were the scalloped bunk beds! We added a scallop trim to a standard bunk bed set, and spray painted the whole piece. I just swapped out the pulls in the drawers, and these details make it feel like a custom set for the room! You can read the steps for the full DIY here.

rifle paper co pattern chair and rug

We kept their floral bristol chair from their old room (courtesy of Rifle Paper Co) as well as their bedding so we kept the colors and whimsical feel going! I knew it would pair really well with the Rifle Paper Hydrangea rug. It is a wool hooked rug so it’s durable and thick and should last for many years. Wool is the fiber that has outlasted the rest of the rugs in our home! I absolutely loved these Scalloped throw pillow covers too. Large enough to use as floor pillows when needed:)

The curtains were an easy DIY I did over the summer. I loved the look of embroidered edge custom curtains, but didn’t want to pay the price tag. I found this embroidered ribbon and used hem tape to iron on the edges of these sage green curtains.

Since these are original large windows, I ordered a custom size. These bamboo roman shades with edge binding were the best option I found. I have tried many types of blinds and they often tend to break when going the cheap route. I am hoping the quality of these will uphold the test of little hands trying to pull them up and down every day!

yellow desk and scallop chair

I found this desk at an antique store months before we even started on this room. I just loved the size and cheery color. I swapped the handles and it looks like it was meant to be in this space! We used this scallop chair from their old room. I think they were most excited about the bulletin board so they could hang their daily art drawings;)

girls shared bedroom bunkbeds daybed

The daybed was an IKEA hemnes daybed DIY we did in their old bedroom. The drawers got a little beat up in the move but they still function well! Veronica will be moving into her own room this summer which is bittersweet, but we are keeping the extra bed in here for when sister sleepovers are necessary:) The paint color we used on each of these beds was Bali by Benjamin Moore.

After the room was all finished and deep cleaned the girls excitedly made plans to color for two weeks in their beds (we will see how long that lasts lol!). Makes me so happy to see them make memories together.
