We finished our complete 1860s living room renovation this year, and I am finally sharing all the details! It was a slow and steady renovation that took many months, and it is now the number one hang spot in our family!

We had the original hardwoods, lead glass bay window, and transom doorways to work with, so we wanted to add back even more original charm. This room gets many little rainbows and bright light in the fall and winter months so I chose a very peaceful green called Blue Gray by Farrow and Ball to paint the whole room.

The biggest project was moving the gas fireplace to the center of the room. This was added in the early 2000s so it was relatively easy to knock down the diagonal wall and move the gas insert to the center of the room. From there Gabe built a frame built from 2 x 4s that fit the gas insert. After drywalling and painting we added in the fireplace and installed a historic inspired cast stone mantel/surround. We shared the step by step of how we built this fireplace in this blog post.

We hired a local company to do some custom shelving and cabinetry to give us some good game and book storage that the kids can access. We designed it similar to our last living room because we loved that cabinet and bookshelf set up so much! The shelving is adjustable which allows us to change things up over time as needed.

We chose a decorative crown molding and simple wall molding to add some character and detail to the room and give it that classic traditional feel.

The last steps were adding in the furniture and decor which we have taken our time with. We went with the big comfy Leigh Sectional from Article as well as the Leigh swivel chair. We have been really happy with how cozy it is! I also love that the material is durable, and you can remove the covers to wash. The best part: Fits our whole family! Hard to find.

We still have a few more details to add like art, but I am taking my time finding the right pieces. I always hope our home will feel warm and inviting to our family and all who visit. This is a room that feels like it is rooting us as we go through other major home renovations. We have spent many evenings in here since! Let us know if we can help you with any questions:)

  • This looks AWESOME!! Well done!!

  • Wow—this renovation is stellar! I’m especially impressed by how you honored the room’s historic soul with elements like the lead-glass bay window, original hardwood floors, and the lush Farrow & Ball “Blue Gray” walls. Moving the fireplace to center and framing it with that cast-stone mantel is a brilliant design move—so elegant and timeless. The custom built-in shelving not only adds function but preserves architectural integrity beautifully. The end result feels cozy, stylish, and utterly inviting—no wonder it’s your family’s favorite spot now! Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful, layered, and inspiring transformation.

  • What a warm a welcoming room you have created! I love the Blue Gray paint color and can imagine how beautiful it must look with changing light throughout the day. I also love the wall molding and crown you added. In combination with the original window and transom doorways, it looks like it was always there.

I am wondering if you considered hardware for your cabinet doors and, if you decided against it, why you made that choice, or if that is another part of your slow decorating process that will be added later on?

Hi Alissa! Thanks for the kind words!
That is a great question. We decided against hardware. I think you could go either way! I just think of hardware more for kitchen cabinetry or consoles, but not necessarily living room bookshelves. Just didn’t seem necessary, and I liked the more minimal look. Just a preference! We used soft close hinges. They are super easy to open and shut!
