We have chipping away on Max and Rocco’s moody blue bedroom design for the better course of the year, and trying our best to keep it a suprise for our boys. This is one of the addition bedrooms. While we were working on this, they were bunking with their little brother Augustine. It has been such a fun project to work on for them, as we based it off their personalities and interests. Let’s give you a tour!

We started with a blank space, so paint was the first decision we made. Our boys requested a deep blue, and we landed on Parma Gray for the ceiling and Selvedge for the walls by Farrow and Ball. It is a beautiful muted blue that feels really moody, but calming. I was tempted to add wallpaper, but this felt like such a good fit for the boys that I couldn’t bring myself to cover the color!
Gabe added all of the flooring, crown molding, chair railing, and lighting. We found a good remote control ceiling fan, and sensor controlled lights for the closet. (You can see the step by step process of building this room here.)

I was initially planning on twin beds for this room, but because it is a smaller space we ultimately chose adult size bunk beds. The boys use their floor space so much for hanging with friends or playing games, and this felt like the best use of space. The size of these bunks should work for them until they get their own rooms when they are in high school.
I used classic blue stripes and terracotta as the accents for this room. Found the classic bedding at Linens and Hutch, and a lucky facebook marketplace find for the vintage trunk! One of their favorite movies and books is Lord of the Rings, so I was very excited to find this canvas map of middle earth.

Another space saver was putting their dressers into the closets, and storage cabinets above for off season clothing or blankets. We used a hanging bar for their nicer clothes (which often end up being stuffed in drawers anyways if we are being honest).

My favorite area of the room was this desk space. Gabe built the floating shelves which we were able to put many of their favorite books, games, and lego builds. The desk is wide enough for both of them to use for homework or drawing – a hobby they love.
We successfully pulled off surprising them, and it was such a heartwarming reaction. One that redeems every hour put into this space.
