Dating through your marriage.

Dating through marriage | IHOD

I was carefully warned by many to enjoy the fun years of dating because it ends after marriage. “All the extras slowly come to a halt once you tie the knot” so they’d say…
And I began to wonder if this would happen to us. You can’t be in the honeymoon phase forever, right?

Your love for each other does change after marriage, but if your lucky, it grows deeper each day because each consistent day is a building block in a very sturdy brick foundation. If you choose, it can be the kind of love that grows over moves across the country, losing loved ones, having babies, and still remaining devoted to each other. So through the longest days and the sleepless nights, financial strain, heart ache, and growing pains, one was looking out for the other. One would be a place of rest for the other. He would be a place of understanding and support, and I would be a listening ear at the end of a long day. Whatever your personality or love language may be, I think we can all agree that when you look for someone else’s needs before your own, love reciprocates and grows.

I like to thank some wise older friends who said that keeping your marriage as the priority (with God as the center), even before your own children, will ultimately be the key to a happy marriage and happy children too.Well here are just a few ways we have tried to keep it fresh! (Mostly Gabe and me being a moody stink eye sometimes trying to be as good as he.)

1) Bring home the faves. Whether its Talenti Gelato or literally (in Gabe’s case) real bacon, we both love to pick up each other’s favorite foods while we are at the store. A few small packs of peanut m & ms have saved a rough 5 o’ clock more times than I can say. When you know the other person took a minute to think about you and took the extra mile to make your day a little better, your love is a little renewed.

2) Saturday morning coffee. We have started to make a habit of having Saturday mornings as our time to just enjoy each other’s company and conversation. He will make the coffee (he has these really good combos down) and whether the kids are up or not, we sit in our living room and just listen to each other. I look forward to it so much.

3) Clean for the other person. This may sound odd, but while flowers and handwritten notes are still incredibly romantic, nothing gets to my heart faster than a man who cleans. Deep cleaning the kitchen is up there on the list of sure fire ways to woo a woman. Now this is probably not a priority for the men folk but Gabe always is thankful when I take care of his work shirts or clean his sink. Even though I know he could manage on his own, it’s good for me to practice service and it’s good practice for him to accept it;) Love is sometimes harder to receive than to give.

4) Plan surprises. We both claim to not like surprises, but we both seem to find ourselves planning them for each other. I really do love when Gabe tells me he has an evening planned and I don’t have to think about a thing…not even booking a babysitter. Being taken care of is something we girls love. I got the chance to redeem myself after a year of non-creative surprises by getting his best buds and brother here for a surprise birthday weekend. Sometimes life can get so crazy we forget to do something out of the ordinary for the other. Even the small surprises can renew that love and appreciation when you really need a lift.

5) Trying out the other’s interests. This started when we were dating, but it is a good way to keep things fun in your marriage. I know for a fact Gabe hates running, but he asked if he could start running with me a few years ago and he has on and off again since. He does it because he knows I love to run, and it makes me happy to do it with him. He even ran a 10K with me…honorable. Gabe has a loyalty to Brewers baseball that runs deep. Bob Uker is a regular guest in our household during baseball season. Although baseball really isn’t my sport, I make it a point to ask how they are doing every night and at least pretend to understand what he is talking about as he explains the current situation. I actually almost titled the post…“Letting Bob Uker be the third wheel in your marriage…” Jk.

Are we experts in marriage? Heck no. Just sharing what we are learning along this great adventure. Would love to hear the ways you keep the love going;)

A cupcake ATM. You would think only Willy Wonka himself could concoct such a genius idea. The idea belongs to Candace Nelson who started the first Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills. Long lines quickly formed and the Hollywood stars were among the devoted customers. Sprinkles can now be found in 12 locations nationwide with Atlanta being one of the lucky few.

What is so brilliant about Sprinkles is that their branding projects an experience that makes you feel like you have stepped into candyland for a moment in time. The inside is just as delightful with modern curves and bold colors and cut out pick up windows. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget. How can you resist the allure of bold colors and vivacious flavors? What you don’t expect is the cupcakes to actually taste fresh and unique, but oooohhhhhhh do they ever. I had bought this one for my kids to share but I admit I was fighting them for the crumbs.

Get yourself over to Lenox Mall quick!

Red Carpet Style: Oscars Re-cap

March 3, 2014

The Oscars are my favorite award show to watch simply because how regal everything is, including the dresses. I don’t get starry eyed over Hollywood Stars, but Gabe and I love analyzing movies, their storylines, and their main actors. The Oscars usually provides my movies to watch and avoid round up;) So here’s a little re-cap of the night…

Best Dressed: Naomi Watts, Camila Alvarez
Best Speech: Lupita Nyong
Well Deserved Win: Frozen
Could have dressed better: Anne Hathaway (She should’ve stuck with Rachel Zoe;))
Best celebrity doppleganger: Jared Letto as Jesus

I am always expected lots of black and red gowns on the Oscars Red Carpet so I gasped when I saw Naomi Watts in this white/ivory Calvin Klein dress. Every inch of it was beaded! The simple rhinestone bib necklace was the perfect finish along with her sleek hair style. Did you see Calista Flockharts dress? Very similar and equally stunning. I especially loved the cut to this dress. Modest, but extremely flattering and feminine. It proves you don’t have to be over the top to make best dressed lists nationwide!

Another favorite….

I think why I always love Julia, even if her dress is cutting edge, is that she knows who she is. She knows what she likes and what looks well on her. Since she is widely loved in Hollywood, she can get away with wearing simpler dresses and still look magnificent. So, when challenged to come with a One of a Kind Red Carpet ready daytime look from my own closet, I had to go with Julia Robert’s look.
I pulled a few black pieces to mix and match and came up with this…

Oscar Inspired } IHOD

A little more formal than every day but I would wear this to a fancy dinner anytime. Its fun to put on a bold pair of lips every once in a while. The hair is actually my every day fun bun toppled look, but it can work for going out as well right?

Julia’s best feature? Her smile. Hands down. So flashing my whites is what I am sorely lacking in these pics 😀
Now its your turn. Best dressed? I want to hear your votes!
Hope you had a fun weekend!

It’s the last day of February. We survived.
I feel like it merits a survival of the fittest party because it was that kind of a month.

I have been really hustlin’ lately. Working hard long after the kids are asleep so I can have my mornings with them. Whenever you start a new business you can guarantee hours of sleep will be sucked into a vacuum and dark circles will be painted on your face. However, I have never been more at peace with where I am at in life both in my business and as a mother.

I told Gabe the other day as hard as having three little ones can be, I know I am going to wish for just one day in this phase of life down the road. Nothing beats the sweet cheeks of a baby, the curiosity of a two year old, and the comedy of a four year old’s language:) As crazy as it even seems to myself, I love the chaos of my life right now. I don’t love it when I am tripping over cars and making sandwiches at the same time as Max is trying to squirm out of my arms, but really, I am lucky to even have the little struggles that remind me that I even get the chance to do this whole motherhood thing. It is a privilege to me.

I am going to be taking the day off tomorrow to hang out with some old an dear girlfriends which can sometimes be the most rejuvenating thing! And of course on Sunday I will be watching the Oscars (and most likely live tweeting my honest thoughts if you want to join in;)).

What are you up to this weekend friends? I hope you get some sun after these weather patterns of gloom! 😉

P.S. Bought this tank after I scheduled where the next Brand Market Workshop will be. Hint! 😉

Look Two// Necklace: Dear Margot // Top: thrifted // Skirt: Zara (similar or here) // Heels: ShoeMint

One of my favorite pair of sandals that are repeat offenders here on IHOD. Well as you may or may not know, they are from ShoeMint. Now, if you asked me the most comfortable pair of shoes I own I would immediately tell you its the two pair of Aldo shoes that Gabe has given me. They go the miles and then some more. So, you can imagine my reaction to hearing Aldo now manufactures ShoeMint shoes! I couldn’t think of a better pairing!

I thought I would show you two looks for these nude leather and suede pumps. During the week, the first look is more accurate to my day to day with a pair of leopard flats. Putting on a pair of nude pumps actually takes the comfortable outfit to a ready to go out look. The second is what I would wear for Sunday best, and these pumps gave me just the right amount of height I needed to wear this Zara skirt I have been waiting to whip out;)

In case you need more convincing to check out ShoeMint  – it is a free, members-only website, with personalized style recommendations (which I find particularly fun), and the styles are timeless classics to wearable versions of the latest and greatest trends. Luxurious, stylish, and high quality, made from refined materials, including real leather and suede. They add new styles every month with an edited assortment of emerging and established brands which keeps me coming back! And the best part of an online shopping experience: always free shipping and returns.

Giveaway: Ready to win a pair? One of you can win a pair of ShoeMint shoes of your choice! To enter, sign up for ShoeMint ( no obligation to buy), and comment on this post with which pair you would choose if you win! (Giveaway is open to US and Canada and will run till next Tuesday!)

Discount: If you have been meaning to try out a pair, you can receive 20% off your first purchase!

Local Notes: Honeycomb Studio

February 24, 2014

I first met Courtney of Honeycomb Studio when she attended my very first Brand Market Workshop in November. When I saw her work, I knew I had to have a first hand look to share her talent with you. As soon as you walk into the studio you feel the creative vibe, and you know you have walked into an artist’s territory. Lucky for us, Courtney so kindly opened the door to her studio to give Kimberly (who took all these beautiful photos!) and I a behind the scenes look at her process, her pieces, and what she loves most about the life of a ceramicist. I was enamored with the small details of her designs that left them with a flawless finish. Rows of beautiful and delicate pieces that I could easily fill my home with;) I will let you get to know her…

SALT

When did you first start Honeycomb Studio full time?
Honeycomb Studio was born in the summer of 2012 when I left my job in non-profit fundraising and charged head first into the world of the working artist. I spent the first 3 months renovating a disgusting old garage in my backyard into my dream studio and then, in late October, fired my first kiln.

What is your day to day schedule like to run the studio?
I wake up around 7:30/8 and, with the first of MANY cups of tea, check emails and print shipping labels for outgoing orders. I head back to my studio around 9 am and begin the process of opening the kiln that I may have fired the day before (hope everything survived!) and starting in on the tasks for the day. Sometimes that task is production, sometimes it’s glazing, sometimes it’s mold making. Because pottery is such a physical discipline, I also try to make it to pilates or the gym around lunch time 3 or 4 times a week.

The afternoon is when the real work gets done. One of my studio assistants usually comes in around 2pm and we work our fingers to the bone and lose all sense of time until 6pm, when they go home. I usually stay in studio until 7ish, which is when I try to wrap everything up and head inside for a glass of wine and dinner with my husband. After dinner, I check emails again, and look in on my website to see if I have any new orders or any inventory that needs updating.

Do you currently have your products in any storefronts? If so, which cities?
Yes! Honeycomb Studio’s ceramics is currently for sale at about 25 select boutiques around the world, and we’re adding more stockists every month. In addition to the shops listed on our website, we’ll also soon be found in shops in Nashville, Brooklyn, Toronto, Mexico City and Perth, Australia. If you are local here in Atlanta, you can head to Steve Mckenzie’s on the Westside, West Elm in Atlantic Station, and Young Blood Boutique in Poncey Highland to see pieces in person!

What do love most about being able to do your craft for a living?
Honeycomb Studio is a labor of love. It is, undoubtedly, the hardest that I have ever worked but it’s hard to explain the power of seeing something you love grow. Of course, I love my days out in the studio with my hands in clay and having the power to realize new designs, but being able to put my work out into the world and have people respond to it is incredibly gratifying. The process of owning a business, has also stretched me in new ways and made me realize new strengths (and weaknesses) that I’d never known.

Big goals for Honeycomb Studio in the future? Can you give us any hints at upcoming products? 😉
Oh yeah, I’ve got all kinds of goals! First and foremost, keep growing, keep connecting with my customers, and keep innovating. I have lots of new forms in mind, as well as a planned foray into lighting. I’m also kind of outgrowing my cute little studio, so I’d also like to start looking for a larger studio space – perhaps with some sort of retail component where we could host fun community events, like a Porcelain and Prosecco night. We’ll see what the future has in store!

So grateful to Courtney for allowing us to spend the morning with her. She is as genuine and sweet as they come. So happy to support her work and can’t wait to see her achieve all those up and coming goals! Porcelein and Prosecco night? I am there!

Keep up with Honeycomb Studio: Shop | Instagram | Facebook

GIVEAWAY: Courtney also wanted to give a Copper Bud Vase to one of you readers! All you have to do is visit her shop and leave a comment letting us your favorite piece to enter!
