Guest Room Refresh Reveal.

Guest room by In Honor of Design

As you all know, we have been renting this little home for the past few years now while we figure out where to settle. I decided not to put making a home on hold, and make the most out of the home we had. I have been taking it room by room and refreshing the spaces from scratch!

Before

Our guest room had many holes in the wall from re-arranged and half hearted attempts at artwork and decor which I started, but never finished. So when you see this before pic, it is probably more accurate to call it a guest room overhaul! I knew I wanted our guest room to feel comfortable, inviting, and on the bohemian side. Thankfully, Anthropologie has that edge to it, and it seemed like a pretty good idea to me to team up again for a room refresh;)

Wall color
The wall color was the first thing I chose for the room. The previous paint color was a pretty dull brown, and I was hoping for a fresher neutral with a subtle hue. We went with a light grey (Valspar’s White Pepper in eggshell finish), and it had the slight blue undertone I was looking for. When the room is small with one main window, it is tough to pull off a dark wall color. I would have loved to try a dark charcoal, but decided I’d keep it light on the walls and go for the dark color in the rug. I really like the result of the grey since it provided a good base to work with varying colors.

The Rug + Quilt
I chose the rug and the quilted coverlet simultaneously to compliment each other. I was smitten for Loloi Rugs, and found exactly the bold pattern I was searching for, but in a more unique design than I had anticipated to find. (I wrote more on  choosing the right rug for a room here.) Since there was some pattern in this design I kept the quilt simple. It is a reversible coverlet, and had the tones I was looking for. Not to mention it is incredibly silky soft.

Live cut headboard | In Honor of Design

The Headboard
Gabe has been stalking lumber yards in the area for a good live cut piece for a headboard for months, but it seems they are extremely hard to find in the size we were hoping for. They are also extremely HEAVY, which created a hanging problem. I remembered my friend Kristin of The Hunted Interior created a genius live cut headboard tutorial made out of plywood so we based this design using her suggestions. I drew the edge on the plywood and we used a jigsaw to cut it out. We designed the headboard so one side could hold a sconce light as well as a shelf underneath it in place of a bedside table. Gabe used a biscuit jointer to attach the shelf, and drilled out a 2 inch hole underneath the sconce base to string the cord through. We used a light oak stain and semi-gloss varnish to finish it. Tip: put a minimum of two coats of the varnish on, and use tack paper to get all the dust off. We both had fun with this project, and hopefully will get to work on another together soon.

Boho textiles | In Honor of Design

The textiles
Choosing pillows and curtains are next to impossible before you have your main pieces figured out. I have made so many pillow purchases and returns before realizing it is just better to wait till everything else is in place first! Since I wanted to keep most of the textiles in a neutral base, I went with the ivory cut out curtains and pushkar pillows that had some interesting texture and tones in them that worked together well. I am not into being too matchy-matchy, and love a looser organic vibe, so these are probably my favorite pieces in the room! I can’t wait to try the linen sheets, since those have such a soft and comfortable material. A blanket or throw is also a great way to pull colors together and add texture to a space. I used this through to pull out more of the charcoal and ivories in the room.

The Bohemian Chandelier
I couldn’t find a bohemian chandelier/hanging piece online or at any markets in my price range, so I got fed up and made one! I will share the EASY tutorial tomorrow! *UPDATE: Tutorial here!

Dresser upgrade | In Honor of Design

The details
The fun part is finding the quirky details that really bring a room together. I bought a bunch of different solid and patterned knobs and pulls to re-vamp a simple white dresser. For the shelf, I found the animal face vase here, and the bottle neck vase here. It’s nice to have some magazine options for guests so these two vases were good bookends for keeping them in place.

The giant plant and planter I picked up at Lowes. I realize it is a risk for me to keep anything green alive in my home, but I find it so much more energizing to have real plants if possible. I mixed faux and real for the dresser top though. No one needs to know;) The admiral hanging mirrors I found at Anthro and the larger wooden one I found at HomeGoods. Mirrors can be a nice alternative to artwork to play around with!

Whew! Did I miss anything? I told Gabe I might leave our master bedroom and move in here…almost serious. We use this room as a guest room when family or friends come to visit, We are still figuring out room situations for when the new baby comes.

Happy almost weekend!

*Anthropologie so kindly sent the bedding, pillows, and curtains for this post. The rest is purchased and created by IHOD. So happy to have been able to work with one of my very favorite companies for this project. You can see the last bedroom we teamed up on here!

Be Kind Work Hard Give Thanks

” Success is not the key to happiness, Happiness is the key to success.”
– Albert Schweitzer

In November, I finished up a whirlwind year of hosting workshops across the country for creative entrepreneurs. The Brand Market was exhilarating to help so many people with their businesses, and I felt very thankful to see a small vision I had come to life. I didn’t take for granted that I was able to teach, create, encourage, and travel as my line of work. I couldn’t have felt more grateful.

But as I sprinted through 2014 with a torch in hand I arrived to the end panting, out of breath, and my head spinning. How did the year fly by? I couldn’t seem to find my motivation anywhere, and I took it as a cue to REST.  A  few weeks later I found out I was expecting. It confirmed to me that God knew I needed that rest, and it was time to take a good look at the next few years. VIEW FULL POST

Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet

Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet | In Honor of Design

We just got back from a jam packed travel weekend, and everyone is currently passed out in their beds, and I am nodding my head at the computer. I could wait to share this later this week, but I was just to jazzed about this incredible SUGAR FREE, CLEAN EATING, WHOLE 30, whatever-you-want-to-call-it Mango Berry Cherry Energizing Sorbet to wait to tell you!

If you have a ninja blender, food processor, yonana machine, or vitamix you should be able to make this with ease and agility my friends.

Ingredients:

2 c. Frozen Mango Berry Medley (Strawberries, Mangos, and blueberries are a great combo!)
1 c. Frozen Cherries
2 Tbls. Chia Seeds
1 c. Fresh Cherries
Optional: Greek yogurt & honey (if you want a creamier breakfast sorbet)

Directions:
Blend your frozen fruits and chia seeds until a sorbet consistency starts to form (there can be small chunks depending on your blender or processer).
Slice your cherries in fourths and hand stir in with a spatula.
*Pre soak your chia seeds in water for 10 minutes for best energizing effectiveness.

This is helping me curb my addiction to ice cream AND coffee believe it or not. It’s a good sugar free kick start to the morning, with the equivilant amount of energy boost a cup of coffee gives me (without the crash afterwards!). My little ones request it frequently and since it pairs well with almonds or granola.

Have any must make frozen breakfast smoothie recipes to share? I am always up for a new one!
TTFN. (Only the cool people know what that stands for;))

Bump Style Challenge: White on white

June 5, 2015

Summer bump style

Today is the last day of the pregnancy style challenge with The Bump and Liz Lange for Target! Thank you all so much for following along:) If you like, you can go vote for your favorite look among all 5 bloggers who participated!

White gauzy dress tank – This is longer, flowy, and ties in the back. I know it will be one of the few tops to get me through the final stretch. It is difficult to find dressy tops that are actually lightweight! I have the hardest time finding ones that I like. I love the detailing of this top, and it looks so much nicer than what you would expect the price tag could buy.

Blanqi bodystyler – I wear these tanks almost every day for either layering, working out, or on their own. The over the bust white tank is perfect for underneath the Liz Lange top since it was see through.

White shorts – I have two pair that I have been rotating. I would have scoffed at maternity shorts my first pregnancy, but the comfort level cannot compare to the sometimes painful rubberband trick. I am not looking back.
Fringe sandals – They are comfortable and they hide my cankles so I consider them winners.

Bags and dark circles under my eyes – a pregnancy staple;)

We are heading to Raleigh, NC this weekend! We are all looking forward to this little getaway. We will be sharing some of our favorite spots on instagram and facebook. Have a beautiful weekend ahead~

Bump Style: Date Night

June 4, 2015

Bump style | In Honor of Design
black and white

Getting date night ready is a little frustrating these days since your closet options start to narrow to about 9 things total that fit you! I was extremely relieved to try on a few Liz Lange dresses and find that they are very accommodating to a growing bump. It is fitting without being too tight, and is comfortable without feeling like you are wearing a tent;)

This black and white Liz Lange dress is a thicker cotton, and since it is sleeveless, I have worn it a few times already due the GA heat that has arrived. I have a feeling it will be one of my most used pieces.

Heels don’t have to be too daunting either when they are a chunky heel like these. I don’t lose my balance and topple over if they are a wider heel!

Tomorrow is the fifth and final look for The Bump and Liz Lange for Target pregnancy style challenge. You will be able to vote for your favorite then! Thanks for following along this week:) This is out of my comfort zone at this point in pregnancy, but it’s been a fun challenge to get dressed and enjoy this unique phase of motherhood!

In case you missed, look one, look two, and look three!

Bump Style Challenge: Vacation Ready

June 3, 2015

Travel style | In Honor of Design

We are hitting the road again this weekend with our little crew. Packing in the summer is much easier than all the socks, coats, and layers in the winter. If it is one thing I have learned traveling while pregnant is that comfortable waistlines are a must for long hours on a plane or in the car.

This is an easy and comfortable option that you can keep on for the day and works for both travel and activities after. I will work on getting some updated packing tips soon. For now, here is today’s pregnancy style challenge with The Bump and Liz Lange for Target:

Embroidered Tee – Super soft embroidered tee with a little boho edge. Have worn this more times than I can count!

Straw wide brim fedora – I love a good wide brim fedora, and it’s a nice way to keep the UV rays off your face!

Liz Lange white denim skinnies – I can’t quite quite white. Against my better judgement! But these stretch denim jeans were not see-through, circulation cutting, or marshmallow inducing;) I usually fold the belly panel over around the waist and wear a longer length tee over.  I have to say this version is looking even more appealing.

Perforated booties – Full support of booties, but look and feel like sandals. Win.

Weekender – Just the right size for a weekend away….if you can narrow down your shoes choice and pack smart that is. This one pictured is old, but here is a similar option.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a new look, but in case you missed, here is look one and look two  for this week’s pregnancy style challenge!
You can check out the other bloggers looks on The Bump’s instagram stream, and at the end of the week you will be able to vote for your fave!

Bump Style Challenge: Sporty

June 2, 2015

Sporty pregnancy style | In Honor of Design

As part of this week’s pregnancy style challenge with The Bump and Liz Lange for Target, I had to get creative with basic pieces. Basics allow you to mix things up multiple ways and work with what you already own. Here are a few pieces I have on frequent rotation….

Striped Skirt – This is a skirt from my conscious closet pieces that I have worn to death before and during pregnancy. It has an elastic waist and is a thick stretch material. Black and white is so versatile that it can pair with varying colors, layers, and patterns. It is from Loft, but here is a similar maternity version.

Liz Lange Grey Tee – Extra long, fitted, and stretchy. The necessary checklist for a comfortable tee during all three trimesters.

Sneakers – I am having a hard time wanting to wear anything else! The great thing about converse sneakers is that they manage to pull of a sporty casual look that doesn’t allude to gym time or lazy dressing (although maybe sometimes that is totally what it is for me :D).

Ball cap – To hide the bad hair day of course.

Reversible Tote – To throw everything under the sun in, and still have room to hide a bag of popcorn for your movie date…

I wear this look just about every week lately for errands, travel, or a night out with Gabe.
What have been your favorite comfortable casual pieces?
I’ll see you all tomorrow with look 3!
x, Anna
